Moin, ich könnte gerade gut Hilfe gebrauchen. In meiner Praxis ist binnen eines Jahres der zweite Wasserschaden inkl. Schimmel aufgetreten. Da ich Asthmatikerin, Allergikerin und immunsupprimiert bin, kann ich dort nicht mehr arbeiten. Ich hab aber einen Haufen laufende Beratungen und es wäre furchtbar, diesen Klientys nicht gerecht werden zu können. Hat jemand eine Idee, zumindest für die nächsten Wochen? Möbel etc sind vorhanden, ein leerer Raum täte es auch. Gerne teilen!

Thanks Intel for causing CPU bugs and not providing a microcode fix for it "because the CPU is old" or something.

So... starting Wednesday, my gentoo laptop startet showing "illegal instruction" faults in python 3.14's implementation of blake2. Unfortunately blake2 is being used by portage so I was left without a working package manager. Meh.

I've then tried replacing the file from another system, recompiling manually and somehow it disappeared by switching to Python 3.13.

That way I now hat least had a way to verify my packages for corruption. But there was none. Dead end.

With the help of gentoo users we eventually found the culprit: AVX(2) or rather - lacking it.

The kernel had been compiled with CONFIG_MITIGATION_GDS to mitigate one of the spectre family of vulnerabilities, but the CPU was so special that neither was it immune to the vulnerability nor did Intel decide to release patched microcode for it.

The linux kernel's fallback mechanism: Disable AVX. Userland did not expect this and tried to call AVX instructions nevertheless. Boom.

This is kind of funny and sad, because I have CPUs both newer and older than this one and they *did* get a microcode fix.

Given that CPU bugs definitely exist at production and I was given a faulty product, I would have loved for the vendor (or respectively Intel) to provide a solution. This should be normal. But to be honest, this laptop is too old for that. Things look better for recent hardware with 7 years of fixing.

But really - CPU producing companies shall stop "cheating" at performance like that. Or at least consequently offer feasable workarounds for the whole lifetime of their products.

And to finish the post with a little rant: What's the worth of "performance gains" of CPUs when most of it is being eaten up by added complexity and bad code in operating systems? We're on a treadmill of "software requires better hardware" and when hardware is getting better, it's being used as an excuse to justify badly written bloaty software.

Hopefully that situation gets better now since hardware should have 7 years of repairability.

In der Therapie hatten wir mal diese Achtsamkeitsübung gemacht und ich hab mich dabei als Bergtroll vorgestellt. Irgendwann wollte ich es mal visualisieren, jetzt war der Moment 💜. (Der Montags-Scribble-Comic ist heute gar nicht scribbelig, aber ich wollte den Stil ähnlich zu meiner Illu „Mountain Queen“ machen, falls sich noch jemand erinnert).

Da freut man sich länger auf das neue 007-Spiel und kurz vor Erscheinen wird dann noch Denovu-Kopierschutz eingebaut. Gleichzeitig habe ich schon Ausschnitte gesehen und bin begeistert. Gerade auch, weil ich weiss, dass io interactive (Hitman) dahinterstecke. Da bin ich ja nun hin und her gerissen.

Einerseits versteh ich ja, wenn man verhindern will, dass Leute sich ums Kaufen (ist das nicht mittlerweile eh nur noch ein Mieten?!) drücken. Andererseits ist man als ehrlicher Spieler ja dann doch unter Generalverdacht, meistens laufen Kopierschutze dann nicht unter nicht-nativem Windows wie Wine oder melden dich als "verdächtig" zurück.

Allgemein habe ich ein Problem, wenn Software nach Hause telefonieren will. Anders als auf Mobilgeräten ist das am PC ja noch ein viel größerer Wilder Westen.

Ei ei, das ist jetzt ein Dilemma, aber ich werde wohl einfach abwarten und vorerst verzichten. Mit Denuvo verhält es sich wenigstens so, dass es nach einer Weile wieder ausgebaut wird.

Ein Mensch, der nicht im Fediverse ist und dem ich im Leben nur gutes wünsche, stellt gerade diese Frage:

"Kennt jemand eine Firma oder eine Beratung außer der Agentur für Arbeit, wo man sich quasi beraten lassen kann, was es noch für berufliche Möglichkeiten gibt mit dem, was man kann und/oder gelernt/studiert hat?"
